Developing SEE Learning® competencies is an on-going effort and a lifelong practice. The assessment tools can support this developmental process. It is also important to keep in mind that acquisition of these competencies are not linear. The SEE Learning assessments can be done as a combination of partial self-assessment and partial teacher assessment with conferencing that provides time for collaborative discussion around progress. Teachers should determine when self-assessment and teacher assessment is necessary depending on age/grade level. It is beneficial for students in grades 6-12 to have a copy of these assessment tools to track their own progress. The tool is more appropriate for teacher only use in grades K to 5.

This collaborative assessment process is a part of universal SEL learning and fosters reflection. It provides a structure that holds the student accountable for their own understanding and application of the learning. It does so through the lens of self-compassion that is strengths-based and encourages a growth mindset. The rubrics and checklists are meant to be used as formative data to help guide instruction and support student engagement.
